Belgian artist, Harold Ancart, has joined art world powerhouse Gagosian Gallery’s steadily growing roster of mid-career artists. In recent months, Gagosian has also announced the signing of rising stars, Jadé Fadojutimi and Art Equity Fund III abstract artist Stanley Whitney, who were both featured in this year’s Venice Biennale. Ancart will have a solo exhibition at the gallery in New York in 2023.
Ancart is both a painter and a sculptor, and his works often feature abstract color blocks and natural forms. Born in Brussels in 1980, he began drawing at an early age and received his Master of Fine Arts from École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Visuels de la Cambre in 2007. After graduating, he immigrated to the United States and settled in New York to pursue his career as an artist.
The move to Gagosian comes on the heels of Ancart’s inclusion in this year’s Whitney Biennial, which, since 1932, has helped launch the careers of iconic artists like Jean-Michel Basquiat, Yayoi Kusama, and Frank Stella. But Ancart’s market has been on the rise since 2016, when The Menil Foundation in Houston, TX bought 27 of his works, and exhibited them together in a show titled Harold Ancart: Untitled (there is no there there). In recent years, he’s been commissioned by New York’s Public Art Fund, exhibited an acclaimed solo show at David Zwirner gallery, and his works have been acquired by major institutions including the Whitney Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, and the Rubell Museum.
Ancart’s auction prices have also been steadily rising. His auction record was set in 2021, when his painting Untitled was purchased at Sotheby’s for $1.02 million (including buyer’s premium). At auction, Ancart’s other works have sold for an average of 170% their pre-sale low estimates. Ancart’s work has also performed well at prestigious art fairs, including Art Basel, FIAC (Foire internationale d’art contemporain) Paris, and Frieze Los Angeles.
Representation by Gagosian Gallery immediately increases Ancart’s exposure to eager collectors and established institutions. Larry Gagosian has firmly established himself as a titan in the primary art market, boasting twenty one locations worldwide and an estimated ~$1 billion in annual sales. Gagosian Gallery is the world’s largest gallery, and represents countless well-established, blue-chip artists, including Andy Warhol, Takashi Murakami, and Damien Hirst.
